Why Do You Need a Transformer To Get Electricity From Solar Panels Into the Grid?
When sunlight falls on the solar panels on the roof, these blue crystals are converting photons into a stream of electrons at an efficiency of 18-20 per cent. But few people know that these photovoltaic panels from the output of 240-600 volts DC, must undergo a 'power metamorphosis' to be integrated into the 380-volt AC power grid. The key hub of this power metamorphosis is the seemingly bulky transformer.
I.The metamorphosis of power form road
Photovoltaic power generation system output of direct current energy as solidified ice crystals, while the grid needs to be a surge of AC current. The inverter takes the lead, cutting the DC into a 50Hz sine wave through a high-frequency switching circuit. But this primary AC has a fatal flaw: its output voltage is only 380 volts, which is like trying to drink up a swimming pool with a straw, and is simply not enough to meet the demand for long-distance transmission.
The voltage level determines how efficiently electricity can be transported. According to Joule's law, line loss is proportional to the square of the current. When a photovoltaic power plant output power of 100kW, 380 volts means 263 amperes of current, and step up to 10kV after the current plummeted to 10 amperes, the line loss is only 1/625 of the original. this is the fundamental value of the existence of the transformer.
II.The magic stage of the transformer
The miracle of electromagnetic induction is performed inside the step-up transformer. When the primary coil is energised with alternating current, an alternating magnetic field forms a highway of magnetic lines of force in the iron core. The secondary coils are wound at a 20:1 turns ratio, as if they were spring-loaded boots to the voltage, ejecting 380 volts to 7600 volts. This precise boosting process makes it possible for photovoltaic power to finally gain access to the high-voltage grid.
Modern smart transformers have evolved into the 'tuners' of the power system. They are equipped with on-load voltage regulating tap changer, which can sense the fluctuation of grid voltage in real time and adjust the ratio automatically. When the grid voltage drops 1%, the transformer can be completed within 20 milliseconds gear switching, to ensure that the output voltage is stable in ± 2% of the national standard range.
III.The total command of the power grid symphony
In the complex power symphony, the transformer acts as the role of orchestra conductor. It is not only to coordinate the PV power station and grid voltage matching, but also to deal with harmonic interference. Test data shows that unfiltered PV inverters may produce 5% harmonic distortion, while transformers can reduce harmonic content to less than 3% through electromagnetic coupling and filtering circuits.
When tens of thousands of distributed PV sites are connected to the grid at the same time, the transformer acts like a toll booth on the power motorway. It regulates the current distribution through impedance matching to avoid local grid overload. A provincial power grid simulation experiments show that the reasonable configuration of the transformer group can make the photovoltaic consumption capacity increased by 23%, the abandoned light rate dropped to less than 5%.
This seemingly bulky iron lump is actually the invisible pusher of the clean energy revolution. From the 20MW photovoltaic array at Beijing Daxing International Airport to the off-grid power station on the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau, the transformer has always silently guarded the last kilometre of photovoltaic conversion. When more and more photovoltaic power is fed into the power grid through transformers, we are witnessing the dawn of a new era - every ray of sunlight finds a home, and every degree of clean power can light up the future.
