Construction of Single-Phase Transformers

Single-phase transformers consist of two windings—Primary and secondary—Located on a magnetic core made of silicon steel laminations.

The magnetic core is primarily used to create a path for the magnetic flux. Silicon steel is chosen to reduce hysteresis losses, and the laminations help minimize losses caused by localized electrical currents induced in a conductor due to varying magnetic fields.

To insulate the laminations from each other, an enamel coating is applied. There are two main types of single-phase transformer constructions: the core-type transformer and the shell-type transformer.
The core-type transformer comprises two vertical legs, also known as limbs, and two horizontal sections, referred to as yokes. Portions of the primary and secondary windings are placed on both limbs to reduce the effects of leakage flux, forming a cylindrical winding.

The shell-type transformer consists of three limbs in the magnetic circuit. Unlike the core-type transformer, the windings are located in the middle limb, while the other limbs create a low reluctance flux path. The primary and secondary windings are divided into two sections: the low-voltage and high-voltage sections.

The key components of a single phase transformer are:

Core
It is made up of grain-oriented silicon steel laminations to reduce eddy current losses. The core provides a low reluctance path for the magnetic flux.

Primary Winding
It is connected to the source of alternating supply. The number of turns in the primary winding is kept as minimum as possible to reduce copper losses.

Secondary Winding
It is connected to the load. The number of turns is adjusted to get the required output voltage value from the induced EMF.

Single-Phase Transformer Types

The following types of transformers are typically constructed to receive and output single-phase AC power:

Audio Transformer

This type removes ground noise from audio signals by supplying the device with magnetic shielding.

Autotransformer
Commonly employed in low-power systems, autotransformers connect circuits with various voltage classes. They consist of only one winding, cannot isolate networks, and are typically lighter, smaller, and cheaper than other types. The voltage supply and electrical load are joined to two taps, with voltages specified by tapping the winding at several points. An autotransformer with a regulated tap is known as a variable transformer or a variac.

Buck-Boost Transformer
This type regulates a voltage rating to meet device specifications and is generally utilized as a circuit isolator.

Constant-Voltage Transformer (CVT)
This transformer creates a relatively constant output voltage despite significant variations in the input voltage.

Constant-Current Transformer (CCT)
Also known as a regulator, this transformer includes a self-regulating secondary section that supplies a consistent output current for any load. It is commonly used in streetlight applications.

How Do Single Phase Transformers Work?

Just like any other transformer, even single phase transformers comprise of primary and secondary windings that feature insulated wires wound on a single iron core. The primary winding is connected to an AC source, while the secondary winding is connected to the load. The iron core links the flux between both these windings. On energizing, the primary winding produces an electromagnetic field that collapses in the iron core, which in turn induces power at the load. Such magnetic flux (collapse and power build up) occurs six times a second in an AC circuit. By altering the primary and secondary windings, the amount of voltage and amperes between the load and source can be altered. Remember that if the voltage is increased by 2 times, the current in secondary coil will reduce to ½ the value of current in the primary coil.

Single Phase Transformer Connections

The single phase transformer refers to the transformer with its primary and secondary winding being single phase winding. Unipolar switching power supply refers to the monopole output, that is, only positive and negative output.

There are two joints on the high-voltage side while three on the low-voltage side. They are: Two input joints on the high-voltage side and three output joints on the low-voltage side.

If it is to supply the low-voltage electricity for civil use (220V lighting and domestic appliances), an earth terminal is necessary. The transformers of three low-voltage output terminals are mostly designed for rural areas where the load is scattered and the power consumption is not too large. Applying symmetrical double output on low-voltage side is beneficial to reduce the loss of lines which is distributed uniformly with the load. Either of the two output ends should be grounded.

The single phase transformer also has connecting groups.

Since the original side of a single-phase transformer is connected by the same magnetic flow, there is a relative polarity relationship. Those who have the same polarity are called dotted ends, while those with different polarity are called synonym ends.

Mark the the primary and secondary winding of dotted ends as head or end (AX、ax) , then the electric potential of the two sides are identical and the connecting group is I/I-12. If the primary and secondary winding of synonym ends are marked as head or end (AX、ax) , the electric potential will be opposite and the connecting group is I/I-6.

10.When Choosing a Single-phase Transformer

Choosing the right single-phase transformer is essential for ensuring the stable operation of electrical devices in a home power system. Here are several key factors and guiding steps to consider:

Determine Voltage Requirements
●Input Voltage: Confirm the input voltage of your home power system (usually 220V or 110V).
●Output Voltage: Determine the output voltage of the transformer based on the voltage requirements of your home appliances. If the appliance requirements differ from the home voltage, select the appropriate transformer.

Calculate Power Requirements
●Total Power Requirements: Calculate the total power requirements of all electrical devices. The power rating of the transformer (usually expressed in VA or kVA) should be greater than or equal to this total to avoid overloading.
●Single Appliance Requirements: If the transformer is intended for a specific appliance, ensure that its rated power exceeds the power requirements of that appliance.

Consider Load Type
●Resistive Loads: Devices such as lights and electric heaters generally have lower transformer requirements.
●Inductive Loads: Devices such as motors and transformers require higher currents during startup. When selecting a transformer, consider its rated current and starting capacity.

Evaluate Efficiency and Losses
●Efficiency: Choose a transformer with high efficiency to minimize energy loss and reduce operating costs.
●Temperature Rise: Ensure the transformer does not overheat under the expected load. Opt for a transformer with a good heat dissipation design.

Check Insulation and Safety
●Insulation Level: Select a transformer with an appropriate insulation level based on the home environment (e.g., humidity, temperature) to ensure safe operation.
●Protective Devices: Check whether the transformer includes overload protection and short-circuit protection functions to enhance system safety.

Consider Size and Installation Location
●Size: Choose a transformer that fits appropriately within your available space.
●Installation Location: Select a dry and well-ventilated location for the transformer to prevent high temperatures or humidity from affecting its operation.
