Ⅰ. What is a transformer oil conservator?

Anyone who has seen field transformers will notice a large cylindrical pipe on the top of certain transformers, similar to the water storage tank of household water heaters. It is not filled with water or gas, but professional transformer insulating oil. This component is named oil conservator, also known as an oil pillow, which is a dedicated oil storage component for oil-immersed transformers. As a standard matching part, the oil conservator is standard accessory for 1000 kva transformer supplied by JINSHANMEN TECHNOLOGY CO., LTD.

Ⅱ. Why do transformers need an oil conservator?

Many users wonder that transformer oil is fully sealed inside the transformer fuel tank, so why is an extra oil conservator configured? The core reason follows the physical principle of thermal expansion and cold contraction.

During daily operation, transformers generate continuous heat and the oil temperature rises. The fully-filled transformer oil will expand in volume, and the excess oil will flow into the oil conservator for buffer space. When the ambient temperature drops, the oil volume shrinks, and the oil flows back to the transformer fuel tank automatically. Its core function is to adjust the oil level, store oil and replenish oil stably, keeping the transformer fuel tank filled with oil all the time.

Besides oil level adjustment, the oil conservator has multiple auxiliary functions, which can stabilize the operating state of isolation power transformer in complex power scenarios:

Insulation function: It isolates the internal live electrical parts from the ground to prevent leakage current risks.

Cooling function: The circulating transformer oil absorbs internal operating heat and dissipates heat to the external environment, avoiding equipment overheating damage.

Oil quality maintenance: It builds a semi-sealed operating environment to reduce oil contact with outside air, slowing down oil oxidation and contamination to extend oil service life.

Moisture isolation: It blocks external moisture from entering transformer oil. Moisture will reduce oil insulation performance, cause electric shock hazards and shorten the service life of 1000 kva transformer.

Ⅲ. What is the structure of a transformer oil conservator?

The main body of the oil conservator is a cylindrical container welded by steel plates, with a volume of about 10% of the transformer fuel tank volume. Normally, half of its internal space is filled with transformer oil, reserving enough space for oil expansion and contraction. It is horizontally installed on the top of the transformer fuel tank, and connected to the main fuel tank through connecting pipelines and a gas relay, so the internal oil level can rise and fall freely with temperature changes. A glass oil level gauge is installed on the side of the oil conservator for staff to check real-time oil level data conveniently, which is convenient for daily inspection of isolation power transformer.

Ⅳ. What are the types of transformer oil conservators?

There are three mainstream types of oil conservators on the global power equipment market: capsule type, corrugated type and diaphragm type.

Capsule-type Oil Conservator: A rubber capsule is adopted inside to separate transformer oil from outside atmosphere. The capsule expands or contracts synchronously with oil volume changes to stabilize internal oil pressure and oil level.

Corrugated-type Oil Conservator: It adopts metal corrugated expansion pieces to isolate oil and air, divided into internal oil type and external oil type. The internal oil type features better sealing performance but larger overall size.

Diaphragm-type Oil Conservator: It uses a rubber diaphragm for oil-air isolation. When oil temperature rises, the diaphragm exhausts outwards; when oil temperature drops, the diaphragm inhales air to balance internal pressure, which is widely matched with conventional 1000 kva transformer for distribution power grid.

Ⅴ. Daily maintenance rules for transformer oil conservators

Scientific daily maintenance can reduce operation faults and prolong the service life of transformers:

          1. Oil level and temperature monitoring: Check the correlation between real-time oil level and operating oil temperature in the early operation stage. Carry out timely maintenance if the data is mismatched.

          2. Seasonal maintenance: Monitor oil level fluctuation in summer to prevent oil overflow caused by high-temperature expansion; replenish qualified transformer oil in winter to avoid insufficient oil volume affecting transformer operation.

          3. Standard oil injection: Complete full exhaust work before oil filling to avoid false oil level caused by mixed air inside pipelines.

          4. Leakage handling: If oil leakage occurs on the oil level window, the internal corrugated piece or diaphragm is damaged. Install a moisture absorber at the breathing port temporarily before professional after-sales maintenance, to protect the internal insulation system of isolation power transformer.
