In power grid operation, oil immersed power transformer serves as the core equipment of power transmission and transformation systems. Long-term continuous operation easily triggers various abnormal faults that threaten power supply safety. As a widely used industrial and civil power distribution device, the 500 kva step down transformer also faces common operational risks including overload, abnormal noise and temperature fluctuation. This article systematically analyzes transformer abnormal faults and standardized treatment methods to guide professional operation and maintenance work.

Ⅰ. Transformer Overload Operation & Processing

Overload is the most common abnormal state of power distribution transformers, which is divided into normal overload and emergency overload with different operation limits and hazard degrees.

1. Normal Overload Capacity

Under normal operating conditions, transformers can operate within a reasonable overload range without damaging internal insulation or shortening service life. The allowable overload multiple and duration are determined based on load curves and ambient temperature. Specifically, outdoor transformers allow a maximum overload of 30%, while indoor transformers are limited to 20%. This scientific design effectively adapts to peak power consumption demands in daily power distribution scenarios.

2. Emergency Overload Operation

To guarantee uninterrupted power supply for key users during grid failures, transformers are permitted short-term emergency overload operation. Emergency overload will raise insulation temperature beyond the rated standard, accelerate aging, and reduce the service life of power transformation equipment. Therefore, such operation is only allowed for fault elimination and is prohibited for long-term use.

Ⅱ. Transformer Abnormal Sound & Troubleshooting

During normal operation, transformer core vibration caused by alternating magnetic flux produces stable and uniform humming sound. Any abnormal sound indicates potential internal or external equipment faults. Typical abnormal sound phenomena and corresponding solutions are listed below.

          1. Overload humming intensification: Overloaded transformers emit louder and heavier continuous humming, accompanied by slight rising of upper oil temperature. Operators shall check ammeter and power meter data timely to confirm overload status and adjust operating load properly.

          2. Irregular wow sound: Large-scale power equipment startup and sharp load fluctuation generate excessive fifth harmonic current, causing irregular wow sound inside transformers. This temporary abnormal sound will disappear automatically after the system load stabilizes.

          3. Mixed noise with normal current: Grid single-phase grounding or resonance overvoltage will increase transformer operating sound. If the current value remains normal with miscellaneous noise, it is usually caused by loose core fastening screws leading to excessive silicon steel sheet vibration.

          4. Continuous cracking discharge sound: Persistent cracking sound indicates partial discharge faults. External discharge can be observed as blue corona or sparks around the bushing at night or on rainy days, resulting from dirty porcelain parts or poor wire clamp contact.

          5. Severe uneven bursting sound: Loud, uneven noise mixed with bursting and gurgling sounds means severe internal faults such as insulation breakdown, lead discharge or tap changer poor contact. The transformer must be stopped immediately for maintenance to avoid safety accidents.

Ⅲ. Transformer Abnormal Temperature & Treatment Measures

Most mainstream power transformers adopt Class A insulation with a maximum winding temperature of 105℃. To prevent premature insulation aging, the upper limit of transformer oil temperature is set at 85℃. If the oil temperature is 10℃ higher than the usual level under the same operating conditions, or keeps rising with stable load and normal cooling devices, internal faults can be confirmed.

Standard inspection steps for over-temperature faults are as follows:

          1. Compare real-time load and cooling medium temperature with historical operating data to exclude normal temperature rise caused by load and environment changes.

          2. For newly installed or overhauled transformers, inspect radiator valve opening status and cooling device operating performance to avoid poor heat dissipation caused by incomplete commissioning.

          3. Calibrate thermometer accuracy to eliminate temperature display errors caused by instrument failure.

If all above inspections are normal while the oil temperature rises abnormally and continuously, internal faults such as core eddy current heating and winding inter-turn short circuit can be judged, and immediate shutdown maintenance is required.

Ⅳ. Transformer Oil Level Abnormality & Solution

Transformer oil conservators are marked with three standard oil level scales of -30℃, 20℃ and 40℃ for pre-operation calibration. False oil level and excessively low oil level are the two most common oil level abnormalities.

1. False Oil Level

Blocked explosion-proof vents, oil gauge pipes or respirators will cause false oil level, where the displayed oil level fails to change with load and temperature. This fault interferes with staff's judgment of real oil volume, requiring regular dredging and maintenance of ventilation and oil passage systems.

2. Excessively Low Oil Level

Excessively low oil level is mainly caused by un-repaired oil leakage and sudden temperature drop. Severe oil shortage exposes cores and windings to the air, resulting in insulation dampness and degraded heat dissipation, which will damage equipment. It will also trigger gas protection actions. Transformers with invisible oil level must be decommissioned immediately.

Ⅴ. Transformer External Abnormality Analysis & Emergency Treatment

1. Common External Faults

          a. Oil leakage: Aging sealing gaskets, loose fixing bolts, poorly sealed valves and defective welding workmanship are the main causes of transformer oil leakage, a common external fault in power transformation equipment.

          b. Bushing flashover discharge: Hidden defects in bushings, surface conductive dust accumulation and system overvoltage will lead to flashover discharge, which causes insulation aging, grounding faults and even equipment explosion in severe cases.

          c. Broken explosion-proof tube glass: Improper glass installation, blocked respirators and internal short circuits will cause explosion-proof tube glass rupture.

          d. Discoloration of lead wire clamp: Loose connecting bolts and oxidized contact surfaces cause joint overheating. The industry standard stipulates that the joint temperature shall not exceed 70℃, and discoloration is a typical overheating warning sign.

2. Grade-I Emergency Shutdown Faults

Minor external abnormalities can be handled by regular monitoring and timely reporting. Three types of severe faults require immediate shutdown followed by official reporting.

          a. Broken explosion-proof glass with outward oil spraying;

          b. Severe bushing rupture and continuous discharge;

          c. Transformer combustion.

Fire fighting measure: When the transformer catches fire, open the oil drain valve to guide oil into the storage pit, and extinguish the fire with dry powder fire extinguishers. The pebbles in the oil storage pit serve for cooling and flow dispersion to prevent fire spreading.

Ⅵ. Operation and Maintenance Summary

Scientific daily inspection and standardized fault disposal are the key to long-term stable operation of power transformers. Early identification of overload, abnormal sound, temperature and oil level faults can effectively extend equipment service life and ensure grid operational safety. In practical engineering scenarios, the stable performance of 500 kva step down transformer largely depends on standardized daily maintenance and timely fault troubleshooting.
