What is an Immersed Transformer
An immersed transformer, also known as an oil-filled transformer, is an electrical transformer that uses oil as an insulating and cooling medium. It is a vital component in power distribution systems as it is responsible for stepping down high-voltage power to a lower voltage suitable for household or industrial use. In this article, we will explore the key aspects of an immersed transformer, its construction, benefits, and uses in various industries.

Advantages of oil-filled transformers
Superior cooling capabilities
Oil-filled transformers possess remarkable cooling capabilities thanks to the exceptional heat transfer properties of oil. Compared to other cooling methods, such as air or forced convection, oil-based cooling provides better thermal stability and reduces the risk of overheating. This ensures optimized performance and longevity for the transformer.
Enhanced performance and reliability
Oil-filled transformers are engineered to withstand high voltage levels, protecting the entire power distribution network. Moreover, they provide crucial safeguards against electrical overloads and short circuits. By maintaining stable operating conditions, these transformers contribute to uninterrupted power supply and prevent costly downtime due to system failures.
Extended lifespan
The insulation and protection provided by oil contribute significantly to the extended lifespan of oil-filled transformers. The high dielectric strength of oil ensures the safe transmission of electricity and shields the internal components from external influences. Compared to other transformer types, oil-filled transformers often outlive their counterparts, resulting in cost savings and increased operational efficiency.
Easy maintenance and servicing
Oil-filled transformers simplify maintenance and servicing processes through efficient oil testing and analysis methods. Regular testing allows for the early detection of potential problems, ensuring timely repairs and preventing catastrophic failures. Additionally, the filtration and replacement processes for the oil are streamlined, minimizing downtime during maintenance activities.
Key Features of Single-Phase Oil-Immersed Transformers
Lightweight and Compact
The transformer is lightweight and compact as compared to similar products in the market that were designed previously. Subsequently, they can be readily installed and integrated in a whole range of environments such as small residences and expansive industries.
Reduced Grid Losses
These transformers are meant to reduce the on-load or no-load losses in the AC power system. This makes them cheaper to operate as it reduces the overall consumption of energy, hence making it economical to advance in renewable energy projects.
Versatile Applications
Single-phase oil-immersed transformers are used in nearly all types of applications. It can be used at power plants, substations, factories, and petrochemical corporations and companies. Due to their flexibility, products of the F & B industry are favoured in many fields.
Customizable Solutions
This implies that every project has its characteristics and sizes, and it is the same for its needs. A single-phase oil-immersed transformer also comes with more flexibility than an ordinary power transformer and can therefore be modified to suit your needs. These transformers are designed to wind up to standard capacities and can also be made special for other operational wants.
Adjustable Short Circuit Impedance
The system has to be easily scalable and rotational to accommodate fluctuations in traffic. As for short circuit impedance, you can easily adjust these transformers, and depending on your desired configuration and operations of the network, these features are flexible enough to suit your needs.
Precise Specifications
Technical equipment should receive much attention especially when one is sourcing for one or when it is being used in the field as it is essential in making sure that the laid down objectives are met. Besides this, the actual transformer size and specifications as well as the types of the aforementioned transformers are finalised after some contractual provisions have been met thus enabling one to receive what he or she wants.
Types Of Oil-immersed Transformers
There are several types of oil-immersed transformers. Here are a few of the most common ones:
Single-phase transformers: These use one pair of windings and are used in lower-load situations, such as rural areas.
Three-phase transformers: These are made up of three pairs of windings. The windings typically go around a core sectioned into three parts. Three-phase transformers are used in higher-load areas and can supply three circuits with energy.
Power transformers: These are designed to handle much higher loads. They can step voltages up or down and transmit a current from one place to another.
Distribution transformers: These transmit lower voltages from the electrical grid to homes and businesses.
Each type of transformer is designed for specific applications and load requirements. The choice between these types depends on the specific needs of the electrical system where the transformer will be used
After adding the new oil-immersed transformer oil, it must pass a test injection. Even if the new and old oil-immersed transformer oil passes the test, it still needs to be mixed after the test. Its physical and chemical properties, brand, and origin are not limited to petroleum, or trademarks, there should be an actual mixing ratio, and mixing experiments can be used later only after qualification.
Electricity has become an indispensable energy source in people's lives, and now overhead wires and transformers of different sizes can be seen everywhere in cities and rural areas. When electricity is transmitted over long distances, in order to reduce the losses in the line, it is necessary to use transformers in power plants to increase the voltage to thousands or even hundreds of thousands of volts.
Obviously, electricity with such a high voltage cannot be directly used for general industrial machinery and household appliances. It is necessary to reduce the voltage to 100-240 volts through a transformer, so as to ensure the safety of electricity use.

Cooling oil according to the principle of heat generated by the coil and magnetic core during operation will transfer to the oil. The temperature of the oil will spread out to the outside through the transformer's metal shell.
Oil-immersed transformers consist of the magnetic core, windings and bushings. The magnetic core provides a path for magnetic flow. Windings create a magnetic field and consist of a conductor coil, wrapped around the core and insulated with press board barriers and screens. The thickness of the winding insulation increases with voltage. Bushings connect transformer windings to a substation. A characteristic feature of an oil-immersed transformer is the oil conservator. It simplifies operation by monitoring the oil level in a tank and providing space for thermal expansion of the oil.
Moreover, the minimum net distance between the outer profile of the fuel oil-immersed transformer and the wall and door of the transformer room also has strict distance requirements. The various civil structures, fire barriers and storage tanks of oil-immersed power transformer substations are designed because of the flammability and liquidity of oil. In addition, "when the transformer room is located in the building, the door shall be a Class A fire door." In this way, the construction investment designed to prevent fire in each substation is naturally much larger.
Structure of Oil-Immersed Transformers
Oil-immersed transformers, a common type of transformer, consist of the following main parts:
Core: The core is the magnetic circuit part of the transformer, made up of laminated silicon steel sheets to transmit magnetic flux and lines of force. The core structure can be divided into a core column and a yoke. The core column houses the primary and secondary windings, and the yoke connects the core columns.
Windings: The windings are the electrical circuit part of the transformer, wound with insulated copper or aluminum wire. The primary winding receives electrical energy, and the secondary winding outputs it. The windings are supported and fixed on the core with insulation materials and are divided into low-voltage windings and high-voltage windings.
Tank: The tank is the outer shell of the transformer, designed to contain all internal components. Usually constructed from welded steel plates, the tank provides sufficient strength and sealing to ensure that the insulating oil inside the transformer does not leak.
Insulating Oil: Insulating oil is a crucial component of the transformer, serving purposes such as insulation, heat dissipation, and arc suppression. In oil-immersed transformers, insulating oil is used to immerse the core and windings, enhancing their electrical and thermal performance.
Accessories: I also include various accessories like breathers, thermometers, radiators, oil purifiers, explosion-proof devices, etc. These accessories ensure the normal operation and safety performance of the transformer.
